Back in January, I switched to a mirrorless camera. Why? Well. Let’s just say it was an accidental amazon prime purchase from an almost three year old. Allie had my phone and I wasn’t policing what she was doing closely enough. A few days later, I opened the door to a UPS driver requesting my signature on a high dollar amazon package. But, I had NO idea what was in that box. I was about to be furious at my husband for making a big purchase without talking to me.
However, the box was addressed to me. I opened it to find a Sony A7III. The exact camera I had been talking to several of my photographer friends who shoot Sony mirrorless. My stomach dropped. Full frame cameras are not exactly cheap. I went upstairs to check my amazon orders and sure enough, the amount was on my bank statement. I talked to Kevin and after a few days of back and forth, I opened the box. Kevin encouraged me to sell my Nikon gear and see how much I loved this new opportunity.
I struggled at first with brand loyalty. I have only ever owned Nikon gear. I had three different Nikon DSLR’s, 7 lenses, tons of accessories. I struggled with the idea of replacing my “trusty bff.” I was wallowing back and forth but after a lot of reading, researching and many talks with other photographers, I was looking forward to seeing what Sony had to offer.
After a few days with my Sony, I fell in love. I paired it with a 50mm and an 85mm lens. The sharpness is amazing. I could compare my photos side my side with my Nikon D750 at the exact settings, and it was completely different! It was a learning curve, and thanks to my amazing friend, Jen & several different YouTube videos, I was able to set up my settings. I super customized my camera to create an easier workflow for shooting.
I have had several people ask me why I love my Sony. There are tons of reasons. Reason number one is that I love the sharpness, the compact and lightweight design, I love how customizable it is. I also love how fast it is to focus, how quiet it is (it can be made entirely silent which I LOVE). Another reason I love it is that I can see exactly how my settings are affecting the photo as I am taking the photo. It is important that I don’t have to guess with adjustments and trial and error. It is displayed RIGHT there as I am shooting. Which makes it so much more accurate to my coloring and style before I even edit the portraits.
Lenses are chose based on what I want them to be capable of. I need a wide angle lens for epic landscape shots and small rooms/indoor shoots. So I do own a wide angle lens. I use it frequently for stuff at home with the girls, and in home lifestyle sessions, getting ready rooms for weddings.
But, I also love the 85mm for the tighter, closer shots with beautiful bokeh. I have a 50mm for that in between. To be honest, my 85 gets used the most. For all portrait sessions, I bring all of my lenses but I barely EVER take off my 85. For wedding days, I need other options. But when it’s portrait time, on goes the 85!
I have an additional backup Sony A7III, in case my camera acts up during a session and I need to work with my other one. (I have never had this happen, but I would rather be safe than sorry!) I also keep 3-4 backup batteries JUST IN CASE. I keep my memory card wallet with 10-15 extra SD cards with as well. I have actually drove to a session without cards in my camera or my wallet of extras. I dashed into Target and grabbed several extra and raced back to my location before my clients arrived. So now I over prepare.
My camera strap is a new addition. It is customized with “Brenda Price Photography” on the strap and I just LOVE it. The strap is floral and blush pink (my favorite). It screams feminine and fun, which me totally me! The strap is from FOTO strap, and I LOVE their mission and company. You can check them out here! Everything is high quality, beautiful and customizable. If you are in the market for a new strap, I completely recommend checking them out!
My fabulous cognac vegan leather camera bag is from Kamrette. It is the Lyra backpack and far surpassed all of my expectations on how much I have been able to put in that bag. I carry it with me everywhere during a session and can carry so many lenses, bodies and accessories. I have crammed that bag full and it is still easy to deal with! Not too heavy and cumbersome. I also love that I can truly customize that shapes and sizes of the inserts to allow me to get the best arrangement. It is nicely padded and I feel like my gear is safe from being bounced around! If you are interested in seeing my bag, it can be purchased here!
There is a little glimpse into what all is in my bag and my favorite things to use!
